Oh You’re Off I See – The Guts of Kane Strang
2017 is shaping up to be another exciting year for New Zealand music. After laboring away for more than half a decade, artists such as Nadia Reid, Fazerdaze and Aldous Harding are finally receiving due attention from well regarded taste makers and music publications alike. One name not to be ignored from this pool of emerging talent is Dunedin artist, Kane Strang.
As opposed to the limpid pond of pop rock we all enjoy delving into from time to time, Kane Strang’s new track “Oh So You’re Off I See” seems to follow a more scenic trajectory. Here his band treads an off-kilter current; see-sawing between angular motifs and melodic flourishes. All the while managing to transition seamlessly through the track’s many colorful sights and sounds. The result is something subtle yet impressive, accessible yet engaging. No easy feat; considering the group are working within a genre that’s been so thoroughly explored over the past few years.
“I’ve got no dreams, no guts, just enemies” Kane sings; the polar opposite of how one would describe this ambitious offering. If his debut album, Blue Cheese, already allowed his songwriting to shine through the confines of a bedroom environment, the step up in production on “Oh So You’re Off I See” has allowed his music to blossom even further.
