Bordo, who is made up of French residents Matt and Vinz among other commonalities share a love of wine and Italy, indicating why the name of their act is derived from the colour of a mutually appreciated drink and the Italian translation for on board (as they want to invite people to come cruise with them). The suitability of this name cannot be argued, as the unique beauty of these mellow, deep house DJ’s is that their sound emanates the simple life, it urges the listener to visualize a holiday, cruising along the coast with a cool beverage in hand, dancing and enjoying life. In addition to the eargasmic escapism Bordo convey, the duo have reached digital success of more than 400k plays on Spotify and 300k plays on SoundCloud, excelled in the iTunes charts and received applause from blogs for their first single How It Feels and EP’s So Hot Wit Me and Sunset On My Mind. These reasons combined urged us to reach out to Bordo and learn a bit more about these two talented, Frenchmen.
The recording location and muse for your style of music all have Bordeaux in common. Prior to 2014 (and 2013 for you Matt), where did you reside? Was it similar to Bordeaux in anyway?
Matt: I’ve always lived in Paris, I had a small apartment above a bar in the Rue Oberkampf. What is different, is the quality of life in Bordeaux, it’s like a medieval village! The ocean is one hour away, the mountains are not too far away either and the red wine is awesome!
Vinz: I used to live in Paris for decades, then Brussels. The big difference with Bordeaux is that it’s a very small city, so you don’t lose time in commuting and it’s not as stressful as big cities. Those 2 points are the main advantages for me, otherwise I wouldn’t live here to be honest, because it’s a bit too small for me and there’s a real lack of cultural events.
What is your favourite place in the world? Does it involve a coast?
Vinz: Lisbon and the French Riviera
Matt: I would say Bukti, a small seaside village north of Bali.
There is a significant difference between WE ARE BROKEN and Bordo, in your first act your music was darker with a greater lean toward hip hop, what happened in the break that you took in 2013 that sparked this change?
We left Paris and that’s why! Living in the south of Europe brings more light.
In addition to your talent, much of your promotional success can be attributed to the digital, modern era of music (e.g. SoundCloud, YouTube, Blogs, etc.). What is your attitude and thoughts toward this new era of the music industry?
We love the new music business! Streaming is definitely a great way to listen to music and own it. It’s easier to discover new artists, new styles and when you move, you don’t need to rent a truck to transport your cd’s and vinyl’s. So it’s quite cool! Light and diverse!
What is your opinion of the French music industry, for those foreign and unbeknownst to it?
I would say that the biggest concern in France is that the music industry separates artists into categories too much.France is a country for literature not music. There’s not as many labels and artists and the main genres here are Disco or French pop and that’s not really what we are doing. France is also about adding comedy into music, if you’re not trying to make people laugh or are musically too serious, you’re not in the right place. That’s also why our fans are mostly abroad.
It was amazing as an Australian, to see Flume as one of your influences. Who is he to you and how has he influenced you music?
Big respect! We adore the energy and the freshness he brought back to music and also those fucking amazing BIG snares! He’s definitely a game changer in electronic music.
Dance on it was a tribute to James Brown, which after listening to your funky basslines has obviously had an influence on your music. Tell us a bit more about the Godfather of Soul’s artistic impact on you.
It is the groove embodied, we love this hard and violent side of funk music, its energy and his attitude on stage cannot be matched.
Vinz: When I was 20, I bought his Live at the Olympia, Paris, 1971 album and I was shocked when I heard it played for the first time. I thought this record was unbelievable, it blew my mind and influenced me completely. It’s a masterpiece!
In addition to Flume and James Brown it was a pleasure to see the multi -talented legend, Marvin Gaye as one of your influences. What other areas of music are you versed in? Do you play multiple instruments or are active in various facets of the production process like Gaye?
Marvin Gaye is also very important to us, he has and will always be one of the greatest soul singers.
We also love trap music in all its facets, it’s a versatile genre that can be interpreted in so many ways.We’re slowly opening our music to this style and fusing it with house, pop and disco. There is so much music to invent and create which is why electronic is our favoured genre, as we believe it is evolving every day and that’s why we love making music. In regards to playing instruments, Matt is a drummer and vocalist and Vinz is a guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist. So we are a two man band, which makes things pretty convenient.
You are at an early stage of your career and have done the gig circuit in France, yet your tropical sound is suited to so many coastal locations. Where in the future would you love to play and would like to see your music received?
Similar to a lot of European artists, we’d love to conquer North America as most of our influences come from there, as well as Australia. It (Australia) seems to be a very open-minded country for artists and we have had strong support from your Australian blogs and radio shows such as Acid Stag and yourselves.
You have been noted to play with Kartell, Claptone and Gui Boratto, were they influences of yours before you worked with them?
We like the sound identity of the label Roche Musique, we knew more about FKJ than Kartell before opening for him and were pleasantly surprised. But to be honest, none of them were really influences of ours, we were predominately influenced by Autograf, Zhu, MOAG Records and certain US artists.
Which artists in particular would you love to work with (dead and alive)?
Without hesitation Amy Winehouse, I can never get tired of her voice.
Otherwise, in term of living artists I would not be against working with Rihanna or Jamiroquai.
You have had great digital success, what has been your greatest achievement and what goals do you have that you are aiming to achieve?
In life the simple things are often the best ones, so I will say to continue to take pleasure in making music every day, for us and our loved ones.
Your sound is part of the new revolution of dance and electronic music, do you have any predictions for what sounds will be prominent in the future of this genre?
Scottish-Caribbean disco trap maybe! Who knows?
One sure thing, is it’s all about fusing genres or sub genres, it’s a game we love to play like many other artists
