Since their inception in 2015, WHARVES have released a number of critically lauded tracks; gaining support from the likes of Triple J Unearthed, community radio and global tastemakers alike. With the release of their new single, Man You Want Me To Be, the group seem to be continuing their upward trajectory.
Right away it’s apparent, the track shares a number of similarities with a particular camp of post-millennia indie rock; a camp in which acts such as Foals and Interpol also reside. These bands have a distinctive sound that possess a certain strain of moodiness. An aesthetic that seems to have stemmed mainly from 80s UK post-punk, which over time has been filtered through varying lenses; ranging from increasingly alternative to more commercially viable. With this track, WHARVES falls into the latter category; with the group retaining a dark, sombre palette whilst working towards a more pop-orientated result. So it is no mistake that Man You Want Me To Be is indeed infectious, and has all the classic elements of what makes an enticing indie rock single. Brooding vocals, an emphasis on melody, a dance friendly drum beat and atmospheric instrumentation full of gloomy, silky smooth hooks; not to mention lyrics charged with inner turmoil and conflict. I wanted to indulge the male ego in how it can be so destructive and jealous, in some way trying to understand it. Expresses front man, Matt Collins. We captured the jagged and dark sounds/feelings in the studio but also kept it within a neat pop structure.
To coincide with the release of their new single, the Lennox Head quartet are currently traversing the East Coast on an eight-date tour. With performances scheduled in Lismore, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Yamba, Wollongong, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane.
